As you might be aware, the way you report your income and expenses to HMRC as a self-employed childminder or nanny is changing from April 2026. The new scheme is called Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD).
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a Government initiative to modernise the tax system. The scheme requires self-employed individuals (including childminders and nannies) to keep digital records and submit regular updates to HMRC using compatible software. The aim is to reduce errors and make tax affairs easier to manage.
Not everyone would qualify. If you receive qualifying income from being a self-employed childminder or nanny and/or from property over a certain threshold, you’ll be legally required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax – based on the level of qualifying income – from the following dates:
April 2026, if your qualifying income is over £50,000 in the 2024 to 2025 tax year
April 2027, if your qualifying income is over £30,000 in the 2025 to 2026 tax year
April 2028, if your qualifying income is over £20,000 in the 2026 to 2027 tax year
If your total income from your childminding business /property income is £20,000 or less, you are not currently required to join the scheme and can continue to file a traditional Self Assessment tax return.
