Connection over correction: Emotion coaching tools for the early years

Children thrive when they feel seen, heard and understood. As Early Years professionals we are in a prime position to support this by offering them our empathy, validation and a safe container to explore their emotional world.

This webinar offers a brief introduction to Emotion Coaching – a practical tool which helps children and adults manage and regulate their emotional responses.

In this session we will consider:

• What happens in the brain when humans experience overwhelm
• Why our need for human connection is so vital
• How we can help or hinder children’s emotional intelligence
• What we can do to support children in moments of emotional dysregulation
• How to create a safe environment where children can learn to understand and manage their feelings and emotions.

About the speaker

Shana Laffy is a qualified therapist/counsellor, parenting coach and trainer, offering consultancy in the field of well-being and mental health.

In her clinical practice, she works with children and young people, adults and couples, supporting people both through the creative arts and more traditional talking therapy. Shana specialises in attachment-based therapies and working with trauma, with a particular interest in neuroscience and brain development. She is an accredited Emotion Coaching UK trainer and delivers group training and 1:1 coaching across the country, both to parents and professionals in a range of educational settings. Shana has worked across the education sector for more than 20 years. As a former EYFS teacher and Ofsted inspector, she brings knowledge from a variety of lead roles in schools, inspection and also working with families in social care settings.
